Outward Expression of that Goal: Self-Defense Physical Training and Sport Aspects Relaxation and Body Control Practice of the 8 Fundamental Areas of the Martial Arts Physical, Mental, and Emotional Self-Defense Training

As you can see, most of the styles have "Self-Development" as part of the primary goals--this is perhaps the major difference between a martial art and almost any other type of physical activity or training type. While it is possible to work on personal development in almost any situation, the study of a martial art is one of the few places where it is a primary, focused goal.

  • In Hapkido, self-development is pursued in the realms of self-discipline, and self-control. The outward expression of this is through self-defense--meaning the student understands the value of their life, has the self-discipline to make good choices, and the self-control to act appropriately on those choices. (And the technical knowledge to make their acts effective.)

  • In Taekwondo, the student develops by learning self-control as a function of physical training and effort. Practitioners learn (and practice) good sportsmanship, how to work with others, and the importance of mental focus. In addition, correct martial practice builds a healthier person.

  • Tai Chi practices self-development by teaching relaxation and flow, so that the practitioner reduces stress and practices proper body posture and movement, which in turn increases overall health. Students of Tai Chi learn mental discipline and patience through repetition and practice.

  • The Eagle System was designed specifically to help children develop physically, mentally, and emotionally. The 8 fundamental areas of the martial arts are taught in such a way that students develop physically in areas of control, balance, and strength, mentally in terms of clear, effective problem-solving and appropriate choices, and emotionally in terms of appropriate behavior and friendly interaction with others.

  • All Women's Self-Defense courses have one goal: to help women learn effective ways to keep themselves safe. This goal encompasses physical, mental, and emotional safety, and emphasizes effective actions and their consequences.
